    Ralf Dahrendorf: A German-British Social Thinker and Public Intellectual

    Early Life and Education

    Ralf Dahrendorf was born in Hamburg, Germany, on May 1, 1929.

    He studied philosophy and classical philology at the University of Hamburg, and social sciences at the London School of Economics.

    Academic Career

    After completing his doctorate in 1954 on unskilled labor in British industry, Dahrendorf taught sociology at the universities of Hamburg (1958), Tübingen (1960), and Konstanz (1966).

    He served as director of the London School of Economics from 1974 to 1984 and as warden of St. Antony's College, Oxford, from 1988.
